PPI, DPI and print preparation

PPI describes image sampling

Pixels per inch connects digital pixels to a physical image size. This calculator uses PPI even when a workflow casually calls it DPI.

DPI can describe printer dots

A printer can place several device dots for one image pixel. Device resolution and image sampling are related but are not identical measurements.

Check the actual file

A metadata label alone is not enough. Verify the pixel dimensions, the intended physical size and the provider’s accepted format. Keep the design proportions and safe margins in view as separate checks.

Try the workflow

10 inches at 300 pixels per inch needs 3000 pixels on that edge. A 5000-pixel edge at 300 PPI represents about 16.67 inches.
